Once they have been delinted and dehulled, the small black cottonseeds contain about 30% fat and the oil is used in everything from potato chips to computer screens.

Hulls can be used as roughage to supplement animal feed, and mulch, or burned to power oil mills, producing ashes that can be bleached to produce lye for making soap.

Pre-treatment and refining of the oil are critical because cottonseeds contain gossypol which is harmful and even lethal to some animals if ingested.
